Family Tree

2013
Zing Magazine Issue 23

Family Tree, commissioned by Zing Magazine, formalizes a loose and ongoing drawing game engaged in by various collective members in their free time. For this iteration, a large pool of drawings were made and randomly paired. Each member then drew the various pairings’ offspring. In turn, the resulting hybrid images were paired and evermore-complex progenies emerged. Despite such a clearly defined set of rules, which one might think is limiting, the resulting images are stranger than anything anyone would have made on their own. By referencing a genealogical map, the layout provides the viewer with the opportunity to track and trace the images as they mutate.
