Christine Gray's, Into The Light , marks her second solo exhibition at Okay Mountain. With Into The Light, Gray continues to explore the frenetic play between real and unreal created using sculptural arrangements as the basis for her paintings. This new body of work takes it's inspiration from American mythological tropes, often revealing surreal landscapes, crude shelters and objects suggestive of rituals with mystical significance.
Christine Gray holds a BFA from University of Texas (2003) and an MFA from UC Santa Barbara (2007). Recent shows include a solo exhibition at the Cress Gallery of Art, University of Tennessee Chattanooga and two-person exhibitions at Project 4 Gallery in Washington, D.C. and at Alfred University. This February she will have a solo show at RARE in New York. She was recently named a finalist in the Miami University Young Painters Competition, where her work can be seen on exhibit through February 12. Gray has also been granted awards and residencies by the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Golden Foundation, 7 Below Arts Initiative, the Jentel Foundation, and 1708 Gallery. She is based in Richmond, Virginia where she is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. A review of her recent solo show, GAZER, can be found in the current issue of Art Papers.
