Okay Mountain is proud to present "The Hot Slump", an exhibition showcasing
and surveying recent works from both well established and emerging artists
from the West Coast and Canada. The line up of artists all boast diverse creative
portfolios and backgrounds, but also share comparable visual styles. Film, illustration,
animation, painting, printmaking all are components of the collective's oeuvre.
The exhibition has been compiled by curators Jay Howell and Gabe Scott from the
111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, CA.
Ryan Bubnis’ clean yet chaotic style has been described as “urban
folk.” Through his paintings, he comments on themes relating to the
human condition. Vibrant, abstracted shapes and faces radiate joy and
optimism while they float in and out of rich, multi-layered realms. He
received his BFA in illustration from The Pacific Northwest College of
Art in 2006 and has exhibited his work throughout the US, UK, Canada
and Taiwan. He has been featured in such publications as Clout, Vapors
and Juxtapoz magazines. Some of his clients include KidRobot, Nike,
Hasbro, ABC and 20th Century Fox. He currently resides in Portland,
Oregon.
Born and raised in Toronto, Cody Cochrane attended 3 years at the
Ontario College of Art and Design for printmaking before fleeing
Toronto for Glasgow. In her three years in Scotland, Cody worked
as one half of illustration/printmaking team Whitehaus. Some of the
commissions acquired during this time included the design and production
of posters for bands such as Arab Strap, Mogwai, Idelwild and Low.
Clients also included record labels Bella Union and V2(Virgin Europe).
Using some of the practices and principals gained in her 6 years of
printmaking experience, Cody has developed a style of painting and
illustration with a rich tapestry of imagery and influence, including,
but not limited to: Druids, comic books, anthropology, weaponry,
lynching, sexuality, video games, and ritual sacrifice, to name a few.
These elements all somehow relate to each other harmoniously in the
worlds she creates. Cody currently lives and works in Toronto.
Jason Jagel was born in 1971 in Boston, Mass and later received
degrees from the California College of Arts and Crafts, BFA 1995 and
Stanford University, MFA 2002. Gallery affiliations include Plane
Space, NY, NY; Queen's Nails Annex, SF, CA; Greg Kucera, Seattle, WA;
and Richard Heller, Santa Monica, CA. He has been featured in numerous
solo and group shows since 1995 including those in New York, Los
Angeles, Tokyo, New Orleans and more. Recent solo exhibitions include
Paper Record at Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle, WA (2007); One Thing
About Music at Plane Space, New York, NY (2007); and Flesh Of My Skin,
at Queens Nails Annex, San Francisco, CA (2007). Jason lives with his
wife and two daughters in San Francisco and teaches at the California
College of the Arts.
Jagel pursues fictional autobiography through drawing & painting as
well as paper sculpture, wood carving, sound, video and installation.
His work is largely informed by his fixation with music, fiction,
comics and movies. In addition to his studio practice & other work,
Jason has made artwork for album covers for the likes of Our Lady of
the Highway, Dudley Perkins, Egon, MF DOOM, Madlib and more.
Griffin McPartland is a garbage man in San Francisco that lives in Oakland
with his wife and child. As one half of the Hot and Cold zine project he has
shown in NYC, London, and some other less exotic locations. Also as a result
of Hot and Cold’s efforts there is a box of his hard work stored in a dark room
in the back of the New York Museum of Modern Art that will never see the light
of day again, let alone be verifiable to any party wishing to prove this claim to
be untrue. Give it a shot, you wont get past reception.
